Being a Ski Bum
So you want to be a ski bum for the winter. Since the beginning of the sport of downhill skiing the dream of becoming a ski bum for skiers has been present. Every person who has caught the skiing and snowboarding bug has had thoughts of dropping everything and heading to the Rockie Mountains for the ski season.
You can put Ski Bums into two different. The broke student that will sleep anywhere and eat pasta for every meal while washing dinner down with draft beer, or the older established skier looking to fulfill a dream and wanting comfort and steak and lobsters for dinner every night with Sam Adams.
Things to keep in mind what ever the motivation to ski all winter are. Ski resorts only pay minimum wage for most jobs. Resort towns cost lots of money to live in. If you work at a resort don't expect to ski on powder days, thats for the guests. There are more men than women. Good for women bad for single guys. Loneliness is also a factor. If you move to a new town alone you need to make friends, but you need to be careful. A lot of transient people travel around between resorts. Last but not least bring lots of money. If you want some security you will need to find a comfortable place to live. Expect to pay around $700.00 a month to rent a room in a condo or $1'600.00 for a 3 bed room condo.
