Length of Roofing Nails
The Length of roofing nail when applying a new roof or a cover roof. Roofing Nails need to penetrate the shingle, the moisture barrier and the roof sheathing, Roofing Nails should penetrate about 7/8 of the sheathing thickness. When roofing nails penetrate all the way through the sheathing the nails tend to back out as the sheating expands and contracts. Roofing nails are sold from half inch on up to 2.5 inches. Other reasons for Length Of Roofing Nails and having roofing nails sit in the sheating rather than through, are condinsation, the possibility of wind blowing water up under asphalt shingles and in the winter ice dams can push up under the shingles and cause leaks as the ice dam melts. Nails should be rated for each application as well. Length Of Roofing Nails for a new single layer asphalt roof would be half inch to 3/4 inch. Length Of Roofing Nails for a arcitechual double thick roof shingle would be 3/4 to 1 inch long. Length Of Roofing Nails for Red Ceder Roof are about 1 inch and are considered a Box Nail in most circles. This article was writen by me, a former professional builder in New England. Be Safe
